2010 Honda Pilot Engine Oil and Coolant Capacity

Adding Engine Oil

  1. Engine Oil Fill Cap Removal: Unscrew and remove the engine oil fill cap located on top of the valve cover.
  2. Adding Oil: Pour the oil slowly and carefully to avoid spills. Clean up any spills immediately as they could damage engine components.
  3. Reinstallation: Reinstall and securely tighten the engine oil fill cap. Wait a few minutes and recheck the oil level using the dipstick. Do not fill above the upper mark to avoid engine damage.

Recommended Engine Oil

  • Oil Type: Use a premium-grade 5W-20 detergent oil displaying the API Certification Seal, indicating energy conservation and compliance with the latest American Petroleum Institute requirements.
  • Viscosity: 5W-20 oil is recommended for year-round protection, improving cold weather starting and fuel economy.

Synthetic Oil

  • Usage: Synthetic motor oil can be used if it meets the same requirements as conventional oil (API Certification Seal and proper weight).
  • Maintenance: Follow the oil and filter change intervals as shown on the odometer/trip meter or multi-information display.

Engine Oil Additives

  • Recommendation: The vehicle does not require oil additives, which could negatively affect engine or transmission performance and durability.

Changing the Engine Oil and Filter

WASHER DRAIN BOLT

  1. Maintenance Interval: Change the oil and filter according to the maintenance messages on the information display or multi-information display.
  2. Preparation: Run the engine until it reaches normal operating temperature, then shut it off. Open the hood and remove the engine oil fill cap.
  3. Draining Oil: Remove the oil drain bolt and washer from the engine bottom, draining the oil into an appropriate container.
  4. Removing Oil Filter: Remove the oil filter and let the remaining oil drain. Ensure the oil filter gasket is not stuck to the engine’s contacting surface before installing a new filter.

  5. Installation: Clean the contacting surface of the new oil filter, install a new washer on the drain bolt, and reinstall the bolt. Tighten the bolt to 29 lbf·ft (39 N·m, 4.0 kgf·m).
  6. Refilling Oil: Refill the engine with the recommended oil. The engine oil change capacity (including the filter) is 4.5 US qt (4.3 L).
  7. Final Steps: Reinstall the engine oil fill cap, start the engine, and ensure the oil pressure indicator goes out within 5 seconds. Check for leaks at the drain bolt and oil filter, then recheck the oil level after a few minutes, adding oil if necessary.

Disposal of Used Oil

  • Environmental Responsibility: Dispose of used oil properly by placing it in a sealed container and taking it to a recycling center. Do not discard it in the trash or dump it on the ground.

Adding Engine Coolant

  1. Checking Coolant Level: If the coolant level in the reserve tank is at or below the MIN line, add coolant to bring it up to the MAX line. Inspect the cooling system for leaks.
  2. Recommended Coolant: Use Honda Long-life Antifreeze/Coolant Type 2, pre-mixed with 50% antifreeze and 50% distilled water. Do not add straight antifreeze or plain water.
  3. Temporary Replacement: If Honda antifreeze/coolant is unavailable, a high-quality, non-silicate coolant recommended for aluminum engines may be used temporarily. Flush and refill with Honda antifreeze/coolant as soon as possible.

Radiator Coolant Level Check

  1. Safety: Allow the engine and radiator to cool before removing the radiator cap to avoid injury from hot coolant spray.
  2. Removing Radiator Cap: Turn the radiator cap counterclockwise without pressing down to relieve pressure, then push down and turn counterclockwise to remove it.
  3. Adding Coolant: The coolant level should be up to the base of the filler neck. Add coolant if needed, pouring slowly and carefully to avoid spills. Clean up any spills immediately.
  4. Final Steps: Reinstall and fully tighten the radiator cap. Fill the reserve tank to halfway between the MAX and MIN marks, then reinstall the reserve tank cap.

Coolant Additives

  • Recommendation: Do not add rust inhibitors or other additives to the cooling system, as they may not be compatible with the coolant or engine components.
