Maintaining the engine oil in your  Honda Ridgeline is essential to ensure optimal performance and engine longevity. Regular checks, timely refills, and consistent oil changes are crucial to preventing engine damage and ensuring that your vehicle runs smoothly. This guide outlines everything you need to know about selecting, checking, adding, and changing your engine oil.

Recommended Engine Oil

Using the correct engine oil is vital for your Honda Ridgeline’s performance. You can use either Honda Genuine Motor Oil or a high-quality commercial oil that meets the following criteria:

  • API Service Grade: SN or higher
  • Certification: API "Starburst" Certification Mark
  • Viscosity: Suitable for the ambient temperature

Note: Some oils are formulated to improve fuel economy. You may also use synthetic motor oil if it meets the API Certification Seal and specified viscosity grade.

Important: Avoid using oil additives as they may negatively affect your engine's performance and durability.

How to Check the Engine Oil

It’s recommended to check the engine oil level every time you refuel to maintain the engine’s health:

  1. Park on Level Ground: Ensure the vehicle is parked on a flat surface.
  2. Turn Off the Engine: Wait about three minutes after turning off the engine.
  3. Remove the Dipstick: Take out the orange dipstick and wipe it clean with a cloth or paper towel.

  4. Check the Oil Level: Insert the dipstick back fully, remove it again, and check that the oil level is between the upper and lower marks.
    • If the oil is near or below the lower mark, slowly add oil, avoiding overfilling.

Adding Engine Oil

If the oil level is low, follow these steps to add engine oil:

  1. Remove the Oil Fill Cap: Unscrew and take off the cap.
  2. Add Oil Slowly: Pour the oil carefully to avoid overfilling.
  3. Recheck the Level: After adding oil, wait three minutes and check the dipstick again.
  4. Secure the Cap: Replace and tighten the oil fill cap securely.

Caution: Overfilling the engine oil can lead to leaks and engine damage. Always wipe away any spilled oil immediately.

Changing the Engine Oil and Oil Filter

Regular oil changes are necessary to keep your engine well-lubricated and running smoothly. Follow these steps:

  1. Warm Up the Engine: Run the engine until it reaches normal operating temperature, then turn it off.
  2. Prepare for Draining: Open the hood and remove the oil fill cap. If your model has an oil pan guard, unscrew bolts A and B and remove the guard.
  3. Drain the Oil: Remove the drain bolt and washer, and let the oil drain into a suitable container.
  4. Replace the Oil Filter:
    • Remove the old filter and discard the remaining oil.
    • Ensure the filter gasket is not stuck to the engine surface.
    • Clean the contact surface and install a new filter, lightly coating the rubber seal with fresh oil.
  5. Reinstall the Drain Bolt: Use a new washer and tighten the drain bolt to 30 lbf∙ft (40 N∙m).
  6. Refill with Oil: Pour in 5.7 US quarts (5.4 liters) of the recommended oil.
  7. Check for Leaks: Start the engine and inspect for leaks around the drain bolt and oil filter.
  8. Final Check: Turn off the engine, wait three minutes, and check the oil level. Add more oil if needed.
  9. Reinstall Oil Pan Guard: Replace the guard and tighten bolts A and B to 40 lbf∙ft (54 N∙m).

Environmental Note: Dispose of used oil responsibly by taking it to a recycling center. Never discard it in the trash or on the ground.

Following this engine oil maintenance guide ensures that your 2024 Honda Ridgeline remains in peak condition. Regular oil checks, proper refills, and timely oil changes are key to keeping your engine healthy, efficient, and reliable for years to come.
