Proper maintenance of your Yamaha WR250R's engine oil is crucial to ensuring its longevity and performance. This guide walks you through the essential steps for checking, changing, and maintaining the engine oil and oil filter element, based on the official Yamaha WR250R manual.

Checking the Engine Oil Level

Before every ride, it’s essential to check the engine oil level to prevent potential engine damage. Follow these steps:



  1. Position the Motorcycle: Place the motorcycle on a flat surface and hold it in an upright position. Ensure the bike is completely vertical, as any tilt can result in an inaccurate oil level reading.

  2. Warm Up the Engine: Start the engine and let it warm up for a few minutes. Once warmed, turn off the engine.

  3. Check the Oil Level: After a few minutes, allowing the oil to settle, check the oil level through the check window located on the bottom-right side of the crankcase. The oil level should be between the minimum and maximum marks.

  4. Add Oil if Necessary: If the oil level is below the minimum mark, add the recommended oil type until it reaches the correct level.

Changing the Engine Oil

Regularly changing the engine oil is critical for maintaining engine health. Yamaha recommends changing the oil at intervals specified in the maintenance chart. Here’s how to do it:

  1. Prepare the Motorcycle: Position the motorcycle on a level surface.

  2. Warm Up the Engine: Start the engine and let it warm up for a few minutes before turning it off.

  3. Drain the Oil: Place an oil pan under the engine. Remove the engine oil filler cap and the drain bolt to let the oil drain completely. Inspect the washer for any damage and replace it if needed.


  4. Replace the Oil Filter (If Necessary):



    • If you're replacing the oil filter, remove the oil filter element cover by unscrewing the bolts.
    • Replace the old oil filter element with a new one, ensuring the O-rings are properly seated.
    • Reinstall the oil filter element cover and tighten the bolts to the specified torque of 10 Nm (7.2 ft·lbf).


  5. Reinstall the Drain Bolt: After the oil has drained, reinstall the drain bolt and tighten it to 20 Nm (14.5 ft·lbf).

  6. Refill the Engine with Oil: Add the specified amount of oil. If you're not replacing the oil filter, add 1.30 liters (1.37 US qt). If you are replacing the filter, add 1.40 liters (1.48 US qt). Afterward, securely reinstall the oil filler cap.

Post-Maintenance Checks

  1. Clean Up: Wipe off any spilled oil, especially after the engine and exhaust system have cooled down.

  2. Check for Leaks: Start the engine and let it idle for a few minutes. Observe the engine for any oil leaks. If leaks are detected, turn off the engine and resolve the issue before operating the motorcycle.

  3. Check Oil Pressure:



    • Remove the bleed bolt.
    • Start the engine and let it idle until oil flows out. If no oil appears after one minute, turn off the engine immediately and consult a Yamaha dealer.
    • Once oil flows, reinstall the bleed bolt and tighten it to 10 Nm (7.2 ft·lbf).

Engine Oil Specifications

To maintain optimal performance, it is crucial to use the correct type of engine oil. Here are the recommended oil types and quantities:



  • Oil Type:
    • YAMALUBE 4, SAE 10W-30 or SAE 20W-40
  • Recommended Engine Oil Grade:
    • API service SG type or higher, JASO standard MA
  • Oil Quantity:
    • Without oil filter element replacement: 1.30 L (1.37 US qt) (1.14 Imp.qt)
    • With oil filter element replacement: 1.40 L (1.48 US qt) (1.23 Imp.qt)

Important Cautions

  • Avoid Clutch Slippage: To prevent clutch slippage, do not mix chemical additives with the engine oil. Avoid using oils with a diesel specification of "CD" or those labeled "ENERGY CONSERVING II" or higher.

  • Prevent Contamination: Ensure no foreign material enters the crankcase during oil changes.
